In 2006, I was hired as a full time EMS instructor at Southeastern Community College in West Burlington, Iowa. My primary duties were teaching and managing the paramedic course. Prior to 2006, the paramedic course was a part-time night course that took nearly two and a half years to complete. When I was hired, my first task was to re-organize the course into a full-time credit program, that is now completed in one year. I designed the program from the ground up, using the National Education Standards for Paramedics, incorporating field and clinical internships into the curriculum - the only paramedic training program in Iowa to do so at that time. I oversaw all classroom, lab, clinical and field internship activities.
That paramedic program was Nationally Accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical ServicesProfessions (CoEMSP).
In July 2013, I was hired by Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, Iowa as the Fire and EMS Coordinator. I was tasked with developing the EMS and Fire Science Degree Programs, which included the development of the National Paramedic Education program. The paramedic program was accredited by Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical ServicesProfessions (CoEMSP). My higher education experience has also taught me the value of collaboration within the departments of Nursing and Allied Health and also across the college campus as a whole. During my tenure at Hawkeye I worked very closely with the nursing program to utilize the college’s virtual hospital to ensure adequate exposure to patient simulation instruction for the paramedic students. We also worked closely together in creating trauma based scenarios that facilitated interaction between nursing and paramedic students. This collaboration helped facilitate greater partnerships across allied health faculty and future health professionals.

"John Cockrell's leadership and tireless commitment to ensuring his students' success is one of the strengths of this program"- Doug P; M Ed, NREMT-P, CoEMSP Site Visit Official
