Online Learning Development and Teaching.
I developed all the courses for Hawkeye Community College's Fire Science and EMS AAS degree programs. I developed many of these courses to be online, and trained adjunct faculty how to teach online.
In 2011, I was tasked with designing a hybrid (or blended) paramedic training program for Southeastern Community College. There were no other hybrid paramedic programs being offered in Iowa, and our advisory committee suggested that we develop a course that people who cannot attend the full-time day program can take. A survey indicated a high level of interest in a hybrid program, so with the input of other faculty, our advisory committee and instructional design department, I developed Iowa's first hybrid paramedic training program.
The program utilized ECollege LMS for the online coursework, and students attended lab sessions on campus once or twice per week. The course was a year long, and launched in January of 2012. 10 people completed the course successfully. Below is a video podcast from my graduate course - Teaching and Learning at a Distance (EDAE 590), in which I describe the course. I have also included examples of the podcasts I used for the hybrid course, syllabus, etc.
"I was a student in John's Hybrid Paramedic program at SCC. If it wouldn't have been for John's initiative of creating and teaching this type of program, I would have never been able to become a paramedic. "- Chris Gerling; paramedic graduate.
